Crisis Response & Urgent Care is a service that children and youth under the age of 18 in Oxford and Elgin Counties can turn to at any time if they are dealing with a crisis or urgent situation.
Our three-step “triple A” approach helps to create a brighter future for the children and youth of Oxford and Elgin Counties:
- Assess the nature of the situation, the level of risk, and the needs of the individual
- Assist in identifying strengths, in de-escalating the situation, in exploring options and choices to improve the situation
- Accomplish creating a safety plan, teach positive and healthy coping skills, connect individuals with services to meet their ongoing needs
When Crisis Response & Urgent Care receives a call during OECYC’s office hours (Monday to Thursday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Fridays 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.), it will be directed to the Urgent Services Therapist. When a call is placed after regular hours, a worker from the Crisis & Intake Team (C-IT) will provide telephone support.
Every call will be assessed as either a crisis or an urgent situation:
- A child or youth is deemed to be in crisis when he or she is hearing or seeing things, and/or experiencing suicidal or homicidal thoughts and/or plans. During office hours, when a caller is a crisis, we respond in a timely manner within the same business day.
- An urgent situation refers to active self-harm behaviour, grief and loss, and/or involves the risk of family breakdown due to behaviour of a child or youth. When a call during office hours is urgent, we respond within one business day.
After a call, we provide follow-up support which may include up to three sessions to assist with resources, appropriate referrals and de-escalating and stabilization of the situation, issue, or problem.
Crisis Response & Urgent Care is not intended for emergency response. If the situation is an emergency, individuals should call 911 or go to their local emergency department.
